Objectives
In this Chapter our goals are:
- Understand the molecular and mass information given in a balanced equation.
- Learn to use a balanced equation to determined relationship moles of reactants and moles of products.
- Learn to relate masses of reactants and products in a chemical reaction.
- Understand the concept of limiting reagents and identify the limiting reactants in a reaction.
- Learn to use the limiting reagent to do stoichiometric calculations.
For Section 9.1
It is very important that in this chapter you can identify the mole ratio in a balanced equation. I advice you to slowly look at examples 9.1- 9.4 on pages 282-287 in details and do the practice problems at the end of each example.
For Section 9.2
Read examples 9.5 and 9.6, notice that the steps described in this section are explained in more detailed compared to the lecture notes we covered in class. Go to page 291 and review the 5 steps for calculations, the masses of reactants, and products in a chemical reaction.
For now, concentrate in balancing equations and applying the stoichiometric process to the following problems:
Homework Assignment:
For Section 9.1 (10pts.)
Pg. 310 Problems #3 a,b,c,d #4 a,b,c,d #7 #8 a,b,c,d #9 a,b,c,d
For Section 9.2 (10 pts.)
Pg. 310-311 Problems #15 a,b,c,d #16 a,b,c,d (note: convert milligrams to grams before you make your calculations and then the answer convert it back to milligrams), #17, 20, 21, 24. Important, you must show all steps in solving each problem if you are to get full credit for this homework assignment.
Sections 9.3 Limiting Reactants and Percent Yield Homework. (10 pts.)
Pg 313 #29, 31, 33, 34a,b,c,d, 35a, c, 36a,c, 38, and 40!!!!!!! DO YOUR HOMEWORK!!!!
DO NOT FORGET TO PRACTICE THE CHAPTER REVIEW QUESTIONS
