Chemistry Standards Review

The following are a series of fill-in reviews for the Chemistry standards covered in each of our instructional units. The correspond to Unit 1 - Unit 7. You can do them individually, or start anywhere in the sequence and move forward, backward, or back to this page. Please let me know if you find any errors.

 

 

 

 

 

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you did not turned in your work before Spring break, you have received a 0 points for every assignment.  Make sure to turn in all the assignments from unit 6, the first day we meet to receive credit.  Log into your account to see what you are missing and what you need to turn in.  

 

Chapter 10

Objectives

  •  Understand the general properties of energy
  • Understand the concepts of temperature and heat
  • Consider the direction of energy flow as heat
  • Be able to understand how energy flow affects internal energy
  • Understand how heat is measured and be able to apply the formulas provided
  • Understand heat forming in a chemical reaction (Enthalpy)
  • Understand and apply Hess's Law

Pg. 353-355 , Problems 8, 10, 11, 13, 14, 15, 16, 19 a-c, 24, 25 a-d, 26, 29, 30 a-c, 31, 32, 33, 50.

 

 


 


Chapter 17

 

Objectives 

  • Understand the collision model of how chemical reactions occur
  • Understand activation energy and how a catalyst speeds up a reaction
  • Consider reactions with reactants and products in different phases
  • Learn how equilibrium is stablished
  • Learn about the characteristics of chemical equilibrium
  • The law of chemical equilibrium and how to calculate values for equilibrium constant
  • What role liquids and solids play in constructing equilibrium expressions
  • Be able to predict changes that occur when a system at equilibrium is disturbed
  • Calculate equilibrium concentrations from equilibrium constants

Homework

Page 628-631, Problems - 1, 5, 6, 8, 18 a-c, 20, 21, 25 a-c, 27, 28, 31, 3438, 40, 41, 46.

Acids and Bases

Solutions Acids & Bases  Review Problems

Objectives

To understand the properties of water such as surface tention, atomic structure, angle formation, bond polarity, and understand water in the solid, liquid and gas state.

Homework

Read Section 14.1, 14.2 Pgs. 488-495

Answer the following: Section 14.1-  Pg 514-515 Questions 1, 3, 5, 10, 11, 12, 13, 15, 17, 18, 21.

and Section 14.2 25, 26, 28, 31, and, 32. 

Homework is due March 1st and 2nd.  

Note: Section 14.3 will be covered with another unit.  DO NOT DO Section 14.3 at this time.

Also you are to view the power points accesible once you log in as student.   Download the files, run them in your computer and copy the notes.  Most important, you need to copy the defenitions of each slide of each slide show.  We already covered Part I but you need to look at Part II and Part III.

Make sure to download the files and then run them from your computer. 

You will need to have MS Power Point to run these files.

Unit 6B

Chapter 15 Solutions

Overview

In this chapter our goals are for to be able to understand and utilize the following techniques and skills:

  • Understand the process of dissolving and why certain substances dissolve in water.

  • Understand qualitative descriptions of the concentration of a solution

  • Understand the factors that affect the rate at which a solid dissolves

  • Understand and use the concentration terms: mass percent and molarity

  • Learn to calculate the contentration of a solution made by dilution.

  • Understand the strategy for solving solution reactions

  • Learn to do calculations for acid base reactions

  • Learn about normality and equivalence weightUnderstand the effect of a solute on solution properties.  

Homework  

Read Sections 15.1 and 15.2

  • Answer the following:  Sec 15.1- Pg. 555, Problems: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 11.

  • Anwet the following: Sec 15.2 - Pg 555-556, Problems: 12 a-b, 13 a-b, 14, 16, 19, 20, 21 a-b, 22 a-b, 24, 26, 27 a-b, 29 a-b, 31 a-b, 32, 34.

  • Answer the following: Sec 15.3 - Pg 557, Problems: 35, 36, 38, 39, 40, 41 a-b, 42, 45, 48, 50, 51.

 Homework is due March 8-9. 

*****Please, before you attempt to solve the above assigned homework problems,  read the section and look at the sample problems.  It will make the learning process a lot easier.  

 

Unit 6C

Chapter 16 Acids and Bases

 

Objectives

In this chapter our goals are the following:

  • Define the properties of acids and bases

  • Conmpare and contrast acids and bases as defined by the theories of Arrhenius and Bronsted-Lowry.

  • Describe how the [H+] and [OH-] are related in a aqueous solution.

  • Be able to classify  a solution as Acidic, Neutral or Basic.

  • Be able to convert hydrogen-ion concentration in to pH values and hydroxide-ion concentration  into pOH values.

  • Describe the purpose of  an acid-base indicatior. 

  • Understand the pH scale in relation to the [H ] and [OH ] concentration

  • Define and strong acid and a weak acid

  • Define a strong base and a weak base

  • Explain how acid-base titration is used to calculate the concentration of an acid or a base.

  • Understand the important points of a titration curve.

 HOMEWORK

Go to page 589 and answer the following problems:

1, 7, 9, 10, 20, 22, 24, 25, 27, 30, 31, 32m 34, 35, 37, 42 and 45.

Gases

 

Objectives


In this chapter our goals are to learn the following:

 

  • Learn about atmospheric pressure and how barometers work.
  • Learn the various units of pressure  and absolute zero and how to convert units of pressure.
  • Understand how temperature and volume affect gases.
  • Understand Boyle’s law, Charles law, Avogadro’s law.
  • Understand and apply the Ideal Gas Law by solving word problems.
  • Understand relationships between partial and total pressure of a gas mixture.
  • Learn about the molar volume of an ideal gas and the definition of STP.

For Section 13.1

Be able to describe the properties of gases.  Be able to convert common units, be able to define all Key Terms in this section.  Explain Boyles law, Charles law, and Avogadro's law.

Read Section 13.1 and 13.2

Solve the following problems: 

  • Sec. 13.1 Problems: 1,2,3,4a-b, 5a-b, 6a-b, 7,9,11,14,16,18,19,20 (Due Feb 9-10)
  • Sec 13.2 Problems: Pg. 481 21, 22, 23, 25, 27, 29, 31, 33, 34, 35, 37, 39, 40, 43, 44 (Due Feb 13-14)
  • Sec. 13.3 Pg. 482-483 46, 47, 48, 49, 50 and also the practice problems  Q’s 7-14 and Pg. 439 45-48 and 51 (Due 16-17)
  • There will be two quizzes and  a chapter test.  The test for this chapter is schedule for February 16-17.  Remember that the wisdome packate is due the day of the test.
